Rapture is a city-state, founded by a man who is referred to only as the Archmaster. It is located in the middle of the continent of Serra. The story is told from the point of view of the protagonist, Booker DeWitt, a private eye. The story is about the events that occurred in the city of Rapture, which was built on an island. The city is located in the sky above the sea.

The story begins in the middle of the 20th century, when the world is dominated by the war and the Great Depression. The protagonist has been hired to look for clues in the city of Rapture, which was the site of a massive explosion. The explosion left the city destroyed, and its citizens were forced to live on the streets. The protagonist is a former military man, and he is hired to find the reason for the explosion. He finds evidence that it was an attack by the US Army, and he is also hired to find out who is responsible for the attack.
